In your opinion, who would you say are the top five best trained soldiers or Military organizations in history?

My list:
1. Spartans
2. Roman Legionaries
3. Japanese Samurai
4. German Waffen SS
5. U.S. Special Forces (Modern)

Thoughts?

1. US Special forces (modern)

2. Any United States Marines (modern or World war II)

3. Army airborne in World War II (hey, they beat the Waffen SS, who had a significant portion of their responsibilities the slaughter of unarmed civilians considered undesirable to the Reich).

4. The Japanese were fanatical and were willing to fight to the death, but in every case on and after June 4, 1942, the United States forces defeated the Japanese forces against them. As for Samurais historically, weren't they more a palace guard and assassin class than a military unit?

5. In ancient times from about 100 BC to 435 AD the Roman legions were the best military units in the world. They conquered an empire and kept the barbarians out.

I'd put the SAS and SBS in at 3 - way better trained than any US special forces - the Waffen SS would also be missing from your list,as it comprised 39 divisions, many of which were nowhere near as well trained and equipped as the 'Big Three' 1st SS,2nd SS, and 3rd SS panzer divisions.

Samurai at 4,and the Janissaries of the Ottoman empire (up to the end of the 16th century) 5th.

The Mangudai and Keshik - specialist troops in Mongol armies - the veteran impis of Zulu armies, the French Foreign Legion, and the BEF in 1914 are all genuine candidates to make the list in places 4 and 5 however.

It is hard to compare eras as they are not apples to apples comparison. Spartans I would rate the highest as they were trained warriors from childhood. At it's height of power the Romans were unbeatable. I would not rate the Waffen-SS above US special forces as not all Waffen-SS units were elite or meet the definition of a modern "special forces." Only a few SS formations could be considered "special forces" they were SS-parachute battalion 500/600 and SS-Jagdverbaende Nord/Sued/Mitte. Most other Waffen-SS formations ranged from elite to mediocre. Horrific losses affected the quality of even the best SS units like the LSSAH. By the beginning of the so-called "battle of the bulge" many members of the infantry were as young as 17 and as old as 36 with many being ex-Luftwaffe flak troops issued SS paybooks and uniforms. Other SS formations were low-grade auxiliary troops and used only for police functions.

The problem with your list is that it is wrong. You have been watching far too many movies about your special forces. During the Vietnam war several members of the Australian forces were court marshaled for refusing to go on patrol with your 'Special forces' little wonder they were ill equipped, smoking pot and worst of all, they lacked discipline. They were allowed to wear just about anything they wished, especially scraps of cloth tied around their heads, incredible. Poor discipline can be seen in just about every middle Eastern forces, jumping up and down and firing their weapons in the air. I doubt very much that the American forces as portrayed in Heartbreak Ridge are anything like the real thing, had that been the British Army, such indiscipline would be met with a few years in a military prison. The best trained I suppose from your list would have been the German troops followed by the Romans. I was witness to an incident on the German border in 1983, an American soldier was waiting for transport at the guardroom of a British Military Police post. He was sitting at the side of the road with his uniform undone, hat on the floor next to him and he was smoking. A RSM from the M.P.'s very nearly had apoplexy. When i spoke to the RSM later he said that he should have not shouted at that particular soldier as he was one of the better ones.

Special forces hands down. They have to go through ten times more crap than any of the others. The Spartans weren't all that special, and most never went through special training. The Romans would take just about anybody with usable skills and could run a few miles. The samurai are the second most disciplined. And the SS, were fairly disciplined but are still sissies compared to modern special forces.

a million) Spartans. Sure, they had been educated from approximately age 7! two)US precise forces--agree there. three)Israeli tankmen. They are totally good educated. An American observer stated their tank gunnery was once the exceptional on this planet. And their techniques are progressive. They even beat US tankers in an pastime. four) German Wehrmacht panzer forces. Very good educated--in phrases of tactical capability, they outclassed no longer handiest the Russians however the western allies all the way down to 1944. Look at Witmann's good fortune. five) Roman legionaries. The Romans placed fine emphasis on coaching, and regularly drilled. It was once stated that their drills had been cold battles, their battles bloody drills.
