First, remember that civilian auto production STOPPED for the duration of the war to enable the production of war-material...

Regarding the GP-1 (G" for a "Government" type contract and "P" commonly used by Ford to designate any passenger car with a wheelbase of 80 inches.): it was CERTAINLY the most produced... over 600,000 were build during the war.

Compare that with the Volkswagen Kübelwagen (German Jeep equivalent) of which only 50,000 were built. The Krupp Protze (German light-truck) numbered only 7,000, and the Opel Blitz was produced in roughly equal numbers.

The only US cars really produced were the Staff-Cars:

EDIT: ONLY 700 VW Kafer (Beetle) were produced between 1936 and 1945.

The 'Truck, Light Duty, 4 Wheel Drive, 1/4 Ton, General Purpose' (GP - Jeep) was by far the most popular, but the Germans made field/staff cars, too, as did the Japanese. Here are some German cars of the era:

Deuce and a half. Jeeps are cute, but 4 wheel drive, 5 ton trucks radically changed warfare. For thousands of years, troops marched to the front at 20 to 30 km per day. Truck transport moved at over a 100 km per day. This was a key factor in the blitzkreig as Germans were able to move troops and guns into breakthrough positions.

For the US GMC produced a series of multi purpose vehicles that ranged from staff cars to light utility trucks to the "duce and a half" 2.5ton truck.

In Britain Bedford trucks were widely used as well as militarised versions of civillian vehicles.

Germany used the KubelWagen as their version of the jeep, and the opel blitz as their equivalent of the 2.5 ton truck.

All sides used militarised versions of civilian vehicles for staff cars. Germany used mercedes, the allies used a lot of GMC vehicles (under the lend lease agreement)

the jeep. functional, durable, first-ever all terrain. same today as then but it now has a hard top. back in the war years (1942-47), the jeep was a rag top with fold down roof (of sorts). until 1960s you could go to a govt auto sale and buy these little gems for well under $200. i'm sorry i didn't. you got something like 40 miles per gallon and until the volkswagen bug, who knew autos could get so much for so little? shows that uncle sam can produce good stuff (when it wants to ...)
