Keeping western Europe from becoming Soviet lackeys like the rest of the Eastern block.

"Fighting" is a strange word to use in the context of the Cold War--it was cold because there wasn't any direct fighting.
On the one hand there was the U.S.A. and its allies--North America, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, & Japan. These countries basically had a capitalist economic system and representative democracies.
On the other hand was the U.S.S.R. and its allies--Eastern Europe, Cuba, and to a certain extent China and East & Southeast Asia. All these countries had governments based upon the communist philosophy of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Stalin. They had a socialistic economic system based upon the rule of the proletariat, which they saw as synonymous with the Communist Party.

McHale's memoir covers the years from 1967 to 1970, when as a teenager he was assigned to the nuclear submarine. Readers come to understand how those years profoundly affected the way he lived the rest of his life. The book focuses on McHale's experiences and those of other men with whom he served who have remained his lifelong friends....

It was the Democracies vs the Communists. The war was fought on the economic battlefield, using military scare tactics. The space race was one of the battles, the Berlin Wall was another.
I hope this is short enough for you.
