Since communism is an economic policy not a geographic or political I'll take a stab. The economic problem with communism is that there is no mechanism for reward inherently built into the system. It's human nature to try to take advantage of rewards. If there are no rewards then there is little motivation to do well. If an entire society does not 'do well' then the society as a whole over time will innevitably fail.

The major disadvantage of communism is a leader who doesn't know what communism. In a true communist society, there is no leader or goverment. Everything and everyone is controlled by the people and everything is shared, not given to goverment like some dictators or facist have made it to be.

Disadvantages of Communism:

Large or geographically broad populations tend to be diverse, making it difficult to maintain a common goal or set of rules for shared effort and resources.

Large, diversified societies tend to gravitate towards systems of heirarchy, reducing the perception of fair distribution of work and resources - which can destablize a communistic society.

Allowing an influx external culture increases the likelyhood of destablizing the homogeneity of the society. As such, communistic systems tend to block out external cultures and exclude outside competition, weakening the system's ability to learn from, or compete with, external economies.

People have to be trustworthy for true communism to work, and not take advantage of the system. It's a human flaw.
