so I'm writing a novel thats a sequel to my previous novel (which was set approx 1797) this one is set approximately 1802. a few of my characters that make a reappearance in this new novel married naval officers and soldiers previously and I want to know to what extend their lives would be affected in 1802. my knowledge of wars is very limited.

The Temne War was from 1801-1805. It pitted the British Empire against the Kingdom of Koya.

The Second Anglo-Maratha War was from 1802-1805. This conflict had the British East India Company against the Maratha Confederacy.

There have always been wars. For 1802, we have:

March 25: France - UK War of Second Coalition ends. War breaks out again in May 1803, and continues for 12 years.

June: Haitian revolutionary Toussaint L'Ouverture is seized by French troops and is imprisoned at the Fort de Joux

July: Gia Long captures Hanoi, completing his unification of Vietnam

Oct: Sweden - Tripoli war ends. US - Tripoli war continues (First Barbary War) to 1805.

Oct: French army enters Switzerland (then known as the Helvetic Republic), as part of the Stecklikrieg civil war.

The Napoleonic Wars start the following year, 1803, however as a Naval officer hw might be out of work in 1802, as the Navy was stood down, until Britain had to start showing Napoleon that he couldn't go around conquering other places, in 1803 Naval officers were back in work (Nelson had been recalled) note the battle of Trafalgar where Nelson and the british Fleet beat the combined forces of the French and Spanish fleets was October 21st 1805.

For Army the Wiki entry is quite good, you only need to read about recruitment to give you an idea of the types of people and their standing in society.

Note though remember that Britain had only just lost the Colonies (US) and had India, which is where Wellington the victor at Waterloo in 1815 learnt his trade.

War of 1812 between USA and the British over kidnapping American sailors amongst other things. They burnt down the White House or the Capitol building or something.
