Hey guys, I was just wondering what new technologies were brought about from WWI and WWII. I already have tanks and radios down for WWI. As for tanks, I was wondering if they were actually effective... apparently, they were made for trenches, but I always thought tanks were big and very slow. Thanks for ANY answers!

Tanks were effective, initially, in WW1.

They terrified the enemy the first few times they make their presence on the battlefield.

Like you note, though, they were slow in movement so that made them huge targets for enemy artillery. What's more, they were prone to breakdown & the armor wasn't 100% impermeable.

Plus while they could've been a revolutionary weapon at the time they were unleashed, tactical commanders at the time had no innovative idea how to use them beyond their being 'shock' items.

Tanks as an offensive weapons system would not come about til WW2 & the German blitzkrieg. To be fair to the WW1 commanders, the German military had nearly 20 years of study & development to establish the 'blitzkrieg' style, not to mention nearly 20 years of tank development that saw them revamped more times than Bill Gates revamps Windows, lol.

Yes, ww1 tanks were effective but slow and therefore not a viable way to win the war.

Most tanks had a top speed of 4mph.

for the most part the effect was psychological, enemy troops , initially, had never seen or a machine of this size used in combat so naturally it warranted a reactive retreat. these were used en mass on several occasions but the benefit was very small, an entire tank advance combined with infantry would yield a whopping 1000 yards and that rate the war would take decades to win.

To the guy below- the ww1 tanks were made for trenches, that was the whole motivation behind building a tank, in ww1 cavalry charges were still common. the shape of the tank and the hull/track design was so that a tank could overwhelm the fortifications of the entrenched enemy. Instead copy and paste from wiki, i suggest you and the asker do a bit of research on this topic.

WW2 saw the entrance of the MBT or main battle tank, these were highly effective weapons and could be use to make gains by the mile in comparison to ww1 it was epic! Many advances were made both in engine design and armor design.

Tanks were effective when they were deployed properly - it took some time for the Army to learn how to do this. Their first at real use was at the Battle of Cambrai. Wikipedia suggests that their success was not as great as earlier historians had suggested:- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cambrai_(1917). I am not sure what you mean about them being 'made for trenches'

One big advance in WWI was the use of meteorology in the use of artillery. For much of the war, the ranging of large guns on the Allied side had been very much a 'suck it and see' approach - if a shell fell short, the crew just adjusted elevation etc. Late in the war detailed weather maps were prepared which fir the first time allowed gun commanders to allow for such things as the effect of wind on shells.

The other major advance was, of course, in the use of aircraft. This included such things as the interrupter gear to allow fighter pilots to fire through their aircraft propellers without shooting that off, proper bomb sights - in the early days of the war projectiles were just thrown over the side of aircraft - and the development of large bombers, such as the German Gothas.

WW2 saw the improvement in aircraft, both sides developing jets, although it was only the Allies that used these to any extent. and in missiles aimed at cities like the German V1 and V2 weapons.

In WW 2

Radar in various capacities.

The aircraft carrier as the most feared naval combat ship

semi-automatic rifles for infantry

Heavy bombers like the B-17 etc.

Jet aircraft

first guided missiles, the V-1 and V-2

Nuclear bomb

As for the effectiveness of tanks, the German Army developed both new, better models, but novel and most destructive tactics to use them in mass formations--the Panzer forces.

profession infantrymen in many of the WWII combatant armies served in the two wars. The senior officers on the two sides in WWII have been very almost all WWI veterans. the domicile shield in Britain, Germany, Japan, and u.s. all favourite adult adult males nicely into their previous due 50s and (in Germany and u.s.) 60s, such diverse of those adult adult males have been veterans. it incredibly is a particularly unhappy actuality (a minimum of interior the u . s .) that the generals in any given conflict have been capitans interior the final conflict.
