Sweden is a constitutional monarchy. King Carl XVI Gustav is the head of state for Sweden while the Prime Minister is head of government and runs the country in political matters. This is the same type of government as that of the United Kingdom. In most modern Constitutional Monarchies, the Ruler has restrictions placed upon his power by the existence of a constitution or as in England's case, constitutional tradition.

The Royal Family of Sweden contains:

King: Carl XVI Gustaf, he has been the King since September 1973.

Queen: Silvia, she was originally a German stewardess. She married Carl Gustav in 1976.

Crown Princess: Victoria, heiress to the Throne of Sweden.

Prince: Carl Philip, was originally heir to the throne, but then constitution was amended to let the eldest child ascend to the throne, even if she is female, meaning Victoria became the heir.

Princess: Madeleine

The Royal Family is popular in Sweden as a symbol of the Swedish People.

Hope I was able to help you out!

For the person who gave me the thumbs down, thanks for letting me finish writing my answer. I guess I could have just copied and pasted my answer like some other people.

FYI-Both, a democracy and a monarchy? That's what a Constitutional Monarchy is. The correct political term is Constitutional Monarchy. Also, terms like capitalism describe the economic system of government, they do not describe the government itself.

It is both a monarchy and a democracy. The king, Carl XVI Gustaf, has NO political powers at all, only ceremonial duties. State visits, cutting ribbons at inaugurations, hosting representatives from other countries, festive dinners, waving to the people at royal birthdays and so on... He is the supreme representative of Sweden, and as such does not participate and must not participate in the political life at all.

You have already been given the correct names of the Royal family in some of the posts above. See also their website at http://www.royalcourt.se/2.19fe5e61065eb9aeea80002271.html if you are interested.

The political powers are held by the government (whose powers are based on the democratically elected Parliament), and in no way by the king. The government is headed by the Prime Minister, not by a president. Fredrik Reinfeldt is the name of the Prime Minister. He is also the leader of the Conservative Party, which is the largest party in the present coalition government of Sweden. Sweden is a very stable democracy, with elections every fourth year. The present government is conservative-to-middle on the political scale. It's a coalition of the large Conservative Party, the small Christian Democrat Party, the medium-sized Center Party (traditionally an agricultural party) and the so called People's Party (Folkpartiet), also called the liberals - which might make Americans confused, since in Sweden, this party is the next most conservative party.

Both. Sweden is what some economists and political scientists call "a mixed system." It has a little bit of Socialism, Capitalism, Democracy and the monarchy (King and Queen) all wrapped into one.

Many people believe that mixed system are actually the best. For instance, one can see all the problems Russia had with just a total communist system, and one can see the problems the U.S. and Hong Kong have had with just a corporate capitalist system. For example, Hong Kong was a city of sharp cointrasts with gleaming modern high rises that also hid poverty and rat-infested slums in the shadows below.

Sweden has avoided all of this. Sweden and Norway also have excellent public health care systems which the United States could learn something from; much more successful than the British and Canadian public health care systems which neo-conservatives in the U.S. like to always criticize.

Sweden is a constitutional monarchy. This means that the head of State is King Gustav, but the head of government is the prime minister. The Prime Minister is the leader of the party with the most seats in parliament. Currently the PM is Fredrik REINFELDT.

Oh BTW, Claude_J I think Switzerland is the banking country. Sweden is in Northern Europe.

As you already know "Constitutional Monarchy" means that the country has a monarch and that his/her position as head of state is enacted by the constitution. That is: No one can claim that the monarchs position is unrightful. In its truest sense it would also mean that the monarch is the one ruling the country. This is not the case in Sweden were the King has no political power. That is why the "...and Parliamentary Democracy" has been added. It explains that the monarch has no influence in running the country but that a democratically elected parliament does.

This is how it is in Sweden, basically. There's a king but he has no real political power. Its mostly for tradition. Like the british royalty. They have a parliament, which is kind of like the United States' Congress, and they have a Prime Minister, just like in England, which is just like a President.

Well, many modern monarchies' kings and queens are just a symbol representing their country. Monarchy isn't with the king and queen "only responsible to God". It has a democratic monarchy like Sweden or England.

Monarchy

King Carl Gustaf XVI and Queen Silvia

Carl XVI Gustaf was born on 30 April 1946, the youngest child and only son of the Hereditary Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha. The Prince and Princess already had four daughters, three of whom were to marry commoners. As Prince Gustaf Adolf was killed in an air crash in 1947, his son was already Sweden's Crown Prince when his grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf acceded to the throne in 1950. His mother, Princess Sibylla, died in 1972.

In 1976, Carl XVI Gustaf married Silvia Renate Sommerlath, thus making her Queen of Sweden. Queen Silvia was born in Heidelberg on 23 December 1943, daughter of the West German business man, Walter Sommerlath. It was while working as Olympic Games Hostess that Miss Sommerlath got to know Carl XVI Gustaf. They became engaged on 12 March 1976, and on 19 June the same year the marriage ceremony took place in Stockholm.

The King and Queen have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, born 14 July 1999, Prince Carl Philip, born 13 May 1979, and Princess Madeleine, born 10 June 1982.

The Swedish have a monarchy but they are kindof like the royalty of England, more like pop icons and tabloid faces. They do not have any extreme pull or rule in the government
