Facts on English folk music???

Please please pleaaaassee give me some facts about english folk music if you know any because i dont know a thing about it

I can only suggest you get a CD or several and listen. Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick, Fairport Converntion, Lindisfarne, the Strawbs - all good stuff and if it doesn't have you dancing round your desk I'll eat me keyboard, lol.

The English Folk Dance & Song Society have a website that might help, and you could always look at Morris Dancing sites.

Or - look up Folk Clubs in your town - some are in pubs, so there might be an age thing - and there's sure to be a Folk Festival near you this summer, again look for the site!

Folk music is as old as the hills but the concept was really established by Cecil Sharpe who started collecting C.late 19th and early 20th cent.

Try reading up on the compositional techniques of Ralph Vaughn Williams. He used them throughout most of his major works.

HERE IN ENGLAND IT IS CALLED "ENGLISH FOLK MUSIC" in the States it is called "COUNTRY MUSIC" or sometimes "ENGLISH COUNTRY MUSIC" to distinguish the two styles which have melted together over the generations anyway. Same thing really.



If you look at Willy Nelson, you see an Englishman, an American with an obvious English ancestry going way back somewhere...
