Question:
Was cleopatra Tutenkahmun's mom?
2009-01-06 10:38:56 UTC
I went to egypt not long ago and we went to visit the Valley of the Kings and also the Valley of the Queens. We didn't go past cleopatra (not that i knew anyway) But we saw Tutankhamen up close and because i was soo shy and scared of the people there (i get xenophobic) I wanted to ask but i couldn't. Is he her son?

No. Cleopatra lived over a thousand years after the time of Tutankhamun. She is not buried in the Valley of the Kings, she died in Alexandria, which did not exist in Tutankhamun's day. She was buried in a tomb with her lover Mark Antony, but the tomb has never been found. Archaeologists probably still dream of finding it.

No, you're out by about 1300 years.

Tutankhamen's parentage was uncertain. The previous Pharaoh, Ikhnaton was unpopular and there was some skulduggery going on.

Cleopatra (actually there were a lot of them, but the famous one was the last - Mark Anthony and all that) was one of the Ptolemys - a greek dynasty that ruled Egypt up to around 55BC. Then the Roman Empire took over.

NO! The two weren't even related! I am studying egyptology at the moment and Tut came after Cleopatra but that was dynasties after (from what I can remember - I may need to look this up again) But basically cleopatra the seventh was part of what is known as the Ptolemaic period.

Tut's actual mother has speculation over it - basically we know that Akhenaten (I think that is his father - like I said my mind is fuzzy at the mo and I would need to have to check my notes) was married but got another woman pregnant - that other woman was Tut's mother. Darn I wish I could remember her name!!!

He was originally thought to be a son of Amenhotep III and his Great Royal Wife Queen Tiye. Later research claimed that he may have been a son of Amenhotep III, although not by Queen Tiye, since Tiye would have been more than fifty years old at the time of Tutankhamun's birth.

No.

Cleopatra lived about 1500 years after Tut.

She was a Macedonian Greek ( descendent of one of Alexander's generals) who ruled Egypt when Ceasar was Roman emperor.

There is a plaster face of a young Amarna-era woman, thought to represent Queen Kiya, the likely mother of Tutankhamun, on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

No-research is still ongoing as to whom his mother was-in fact the DNA test results on his two twins will soon tell us whom was most likely his mother, but Cleopatra is most definitely ruled out.In fact, the results are expected out in Januaary/ February 2009-let's hope anyway.

Nope. They weren't even related! Cleo was Greek, not Egyptian! And seperated by many centuries! Even Tutankhamun's parentage is disputed. Perhaps the most accepted theory at the moment is that Akhenaten was his father. However Nefertiti, Akhenaten's famous wife, was not Tutankhamun's mother. It was more likely a lesser wife possibly Kiya.

Cleopatra

Cleopatra VII Philopator (in Greek, Κλεοπάτρα Φιλοπάτωρ; January 69 BC – 30 BC) was a Hellenistic ruler of Egypt, originally sharing power with her father Ptolemy XII and later with her brothers/husbands Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV; eventually gaining sole rule of Egypt. As Pharaoh, she consummated a liaison with Gaius Julius Caesar that solidified her grip on the throne. After Caesar's assassination, she aligned with Mark Antony, with whom she produced a pair of twins and a son. In all, Cleopatra had four children, a first born son by Caesar (Ptolemy Caesar nicknamed Caesarion) and three by Mark Antony (the pair of twins, Cleopatra Selene II and Alexander Helios, and last a son Ptolemy Philadelphus). Her successive unions with her brothers produced no children. Her reign marks the end of the Hellenistic Era and the beginning of the Roman Era in the eastern Mediterranean. She was the last Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt. Her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion, co-ruled in name with his mother only a very few years before Octavian, later on renamed Caesar Augustus, had him executed, most probably by strangulation, which in Antiquity was the execution method reserved for infants and pre-pubescents, thus adding humiliation to his execution.

Tutankhamen

Tutankhamen (alternately spelled with Tutenkh-, -amen, -amon), Egyptian twt-ˁnḫ-ı͗mn; tVwa:t-ʕa:nəx-ʔaˡma:n (1341 BC – 1323 BC) was an Egyptian Pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty (ruled 1333 BC – 1324 BC in the conventional chronology), during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. His original name, Tutankhaten, means "Living Image of Aten", while Tutankhamun means "Living Image of Amun". Often the name Tutankhamun was written Amen-tut-ankh, meaning "living image of Amun", due to scribal custom which most often placed the divine name at the beginning of the phrase in order to honor the divine being. [2] He is possibly also the Nibhurrereya of the Amarna letters. He was likely the eighteenth dynasty king 'Rathotis', who according to Manetho, an ancient historian, had reigned for nine years - a figure which conforms with Flavius Josephus' version of Manetho's Epitome.[3]
