They never knew each other for the reasons Del listed below. Giuseppi Verdi, born in Roncole, Italy on October 10, 1813 and died January 27, 1901. Marian Anderson, born February 27, 1897 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (though she claimed her birthday was February 17, 1902), and died on April 8, 1993. Any relationship between them would be purely musical and not personal on any level whatsoever. Verdi wrote operas and Marian Anderson was an opera singer. However, I would like to clarify the notion that Anderson necessarily sang a lot of Verdi roles. She sang one Verdi role--that of Ulrica in Verdi's "Un Ballo in Machera". She was just shy of her 58th birthday, so vocally a bit past her prime, but her appearance was historically important since it marked the first time an African-American singer was hired by the New York Metropolitan Opera Company as a regular company member. Despite her status as a company member, they never had her sing any further roles with the Met again. Aside from racism, and that Marian's voice may not have been what it once was, Marian Anderson was also a contralto. Though known for her wide vocal range, most of the bigger Verdi female roles were for sopranos--though it would have been interesting to see what she could have done with the role of Azucena in "Il Trovatore" (a mezzo-soprano role usually requiring a dark and rich timbre). Marian's career was primarily as a recitalists and while she sang various arias from operas and oratorios, she was known for her sensitive and beautiful interpretations of lieder and other art songs as well as for bringing "*****" spirituals to European audiences.
