Was the holocaust real?

My friend David says it was, but my friend Kenny says it wasn't. Kenny is smart but he's an alcoholic so I don't know if he can be trusted.

Kenny is not only an alcoholic, his areas of smartness do not include the history of Europe in mid-20th century.



No sane person could deny that the Holocaust of the Jews (and 9 million others, such as gypsies, homosexuals, Slavs) by the Nazis took place. There is just a huge amount of documentary and movie film and still photo evidence - much harder to fake before the times of Photoshop. People might argue about exact numbers to the nearest thousand or so, but the broad sweep of 6 million Jews murdered thus cannot be denied.

In the 1980s I had a good friend who was the daughter of an Auschwitz survivor.



Her mother wouldn't talk about the events too often, but she had been young and still strong and could work, so they kept her alive. Many people she knew went for "showers" and did not return.



At the end of the war American GIs liberated these camps and took photos of what they found there - surviving people reduced to a state that we cannot imagine, Xyklon B canisters, the gas chambers - yes it happened.



The doubters should also check out some stats. In Poland in 1939 were over 3 million Jews. In 1945 that number had shrunk to 200,000. Where did they all go if they were not killed, they simply disappeared? Similarly the Jewish population of the Netherlands shrank from 140,000 to 35,000. I have talked to people in the Netherlands who have seen people loaded onto cattle trucks to be taken to Auschwitz.

There were quite a few survivors who lived to tell the tales. Contact the Simon Wiesenthal Center - they will give you information. It is 70 years now since the war ended, so most of the survivors have since died, but many of them were fine people and had immense courage.

Denying the fact that the Holocaust occurred makes about as much sense as claiming that the earth is flat. It was the meticulous Nazis themselves who produced a large portion of the documents now available to anyone who desires to peruse them. They all point to the deniers' hypocrisy and make it plain that their claim to a "Holocaust hoax" is an unmitigated farce. Furthermore, contrary to the deniers' assertions, Hitler was fully aware of and did, in fact, order the annihilation of the European Jews. The facts of the Holocaust are so well documented in serious scholarly accounts that denial of Hitler's responsibility for the murder of the Jews is too preposterous to require refutation and argument.

It was real enough and there is plenty of hard evidence. Try Googling the word. As Phil has said, it wasn't only Jews who were targeted. The mentally and physical disadvantaged, communists and Romanies were amongst some of the others who ended up in the death camps.

The Germany government had to build 26 kilometres of shelving in four buildings just to hold it all.

And that's hardly the only repository of Nazi wartime documents proving the Holocaust happened.



Plus there's all the proof captured by multiple Allied Armies - American, British, Canadian & Soviet.

Proof such as Nazi death camps, camp guards, and still more documents.

All those WW2 Veterans had no reason to make up the Holocaust and spend the rest of their lives lying.

More to the point, no power on Earth could make them. Especially not when they lay dying of old age.



Then there's all the people of the nations of Occupied Europe who also saw the proof of the Holocaust.

People who saw the camps. Who saw the survivors. Whose governments also captured documentary proof.



Then there's even more compelling proof.

Like the admissions and diaries and confessions of Nazis who participated in the Holocaust.

Some deniers pretend those Nazis were tortured into giving false confessions.

But like the Allied Veterans who liberated Nazi death camps, there was no power on Earth that could keep them silent for the rest of their lives if they'd been lying.

And the fact remains none of the Nazis ever recanted their confessions, not even on their death beds.



Including ones still alive in the modern era like this former SS officer:



"Oskar Groening, 94, nicknamed the "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz," may be one of the last people to face trial in Germany for Nazi-era crimes. He trained as a bank clerk before joining Germany's SS military unit as a soldier.

A judge in the northern German city of Lueneburg convicted Groening for his role at the camp following testimony that he presided over prisoners' belongings and collected their money before they were marched to their death in gas chambers.

He did not dispute the charges and admitted "moral guilt" for the atrocities."
