Months before the suicide by Hitler, he was caught in escape to Switzerland (Lake Como route may be) & killed. His body was hung by his feet upside down from a street-lamp post in a Milan next day.
Then the Fascists were removed from the government & Italy was proclaimed an Ally along with UK, USA & USSR with King Victor Emanuel's consent, who abdicated next year to none. Allied bombing of Italy from Mediterranean islands stopped after that. None noticed how or where the body of Mussolini was buried. But his body was spared the fate of that of Hitler of being burnt in petrol, in the open outside his bunker.
The surrender to the Allies had a very important consequence for Italy. As a victor in the War Italy wasn't obliged to face the war trials like the one at Nuremberg.

Mussolini's Govt was overthrown by the Italians and Mussolini tried to escape wearing a German Uniform in a German convoy. The Italian partisans checked the convoy at a road block and caught him near Lake Como. He was taken to a farmhouse and his Mistress Clara was brought to him to spend their last night on earth together. Next morning a partisan executioner named Audiso took Mussolini and Clara in a car and shot them near a wall. Their bodies were brought to Milan and hanged upside down in a gas station with another group of high ranking Mussolini's officials the partisans had killed. Mussolini's body was abused at the Gas station by the public and one women even fired 5 shots at his dead body.Later the Allies got the partisans to cut down his body and bury it at a paupers grave.Hitler when he got the news vowed he would not let this happen to him and killed himself a week later.

Batteleaxe is not right. Mussolini died BEFORE Germany surrendered. The killing and public degradation of Mussolini (hanged upside down by Italian enemies) occurred in the latter part of April 1945. In fact when Hitler heard of it it strengthened his resolve not to let his own body fall into enemy hands and be displayed as a trophy or publicly abused. Hence the order to be cremated by petrol.

He was overthrown and imprisoned, rescued by Nazi Germany and installed as a puppet leader of part of Italy, but more dependent on Nazi Germany than before. At a certain stage, in April 1945, he secretly tried to flee Italy, discovered and captured by a Communist group of Partisans, together with his mistress. Both were tried, executed, and had their corpses publicly hanged upside down.

When Germany surrendered, the forces backing Mussolini in northern Italy disappeared. He tried to flee to Switzerland but was captured and killed.
