I am doing a project for the story Anna and the King of Siam, and was wondering the importance, culture, and story behind the name and heritage of Siam. Why did the name change to a different name?
I will give out points, thanks!

Siam is now known as Thai land. .after a coup in 1932, Siam became a constitutional monarchy. A few years later, in 1939, it changed its name to Thailand, meaning "Land of the Free," went back to the name Siam from 1945 to 1949, then became Thailand again.

Thailand is the current country name of what used to be Siam. What you see with changes in names of countries is the end result of a preference for a more modern and politically correct name that countries like Thailand have done. Burma,in the same region of the world changed its name to Myramar a few years ago.

Thailand.
Thailand was known to the "west" as Siam until 1939.
LIFE Magazine July, 1939. "On June 24, 1939 the Government of Siam, the only free nation ( = the only non-European colony ) in Southeast Asia, changes its name to Thailand, which means 'Free Land' ".
Sayam, from which Siam came, was the name for Thailand in the the Szechwan dialect of Chinese.

Siam changed its name on 5/11/1949 but there is no reason really given but I am assuming it is because the Siamese/Thai people chose to have a constitutional monarchy

It looks like Siam was Thailand up to early 1900's. I suggest just looking for sources that cover the history of Thailand up to 1930's.
