Bathrooms were only affordable to the upper class. Common people used outdoor outhouses or the woods.

Yes, but only for the well to do. By our standards it was barely a bathroom: it was a separate room with a tub. To be filled by servants with hot water. That was a lot of work (heating the water, filling the tub, removing the water after the bath) so it didn't happen daily. Only the very rich had that kind of bathroom. Often, there was no bathroom, but a dividing screen in a large bedroom with the tub behind it. Usually there was an ewer on a dressing table for daily washing.

More common was to use the washing tub as bathing tub in the scullery or the kitchen. During the week, the tub was used for the family laundry. On Friday or Saturday evenings, the family took a bath. Usually daddy first, then (in the same water) the rest of the family.

In cities you had bathhouses, commercial enterprises offering you a bath.

They've had bathrooms since Rome

It's just that they're not as advanced as they are today
