It was decided that Harriet Tubman will replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. What are your thoughts on this?

Anrew Jackson has been on the $20 as far back as I remember. So have the rest of the Presidents. On one hand, I wouldn't mind seeing some actual changes taking place, but on the other hand, you don't mess around with tradition. Some would applaud with the decision to take "In God We Trust" out of our currency and others would protest that decision. To be fair, I would be one of the protestors. However, rather than submit one design, Harriet Tubman in this case, why not showcase the important Women of US History with a series of bills commemorating their achievements over, say a 10 year span? 6 women a year for the next 10 years featured on the $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and the $100 bill? Maybe mint a new $1 and a $5 coin as a follow-up. The possibilities are there.

I think it's a great thing. The $20 bill is not the only money they are changing. People should google "Harriet Tubman." She assisted a lot of slaves and guided them to freedom. If you look at other countries' money, it is very different. They already have women on their bills.
Also, I would guess that that there is more than one reason that they are changing the way paper money looks. There is probably a lot of counterfeit bills out there..

I have always looked for a more fairer life. So I do have more then one feeling on this issue. My first issue, which I have talked about since I was in college over 20yrs ago, that why do we not have women on our dollars. And before Texas took over the national history book scam, I hear about how hateful and racists Jackson was to native Americans, IE Indians. He looked at them lower then slime on his boot. But he seemed to think that way about most people. Never understood why he was on our currency in the first place. I am sorry to say, I did not learn about Harriet Tubman until I was much older. Not much of her story was taught in my history class. My first choice of a women would have been Pocahontas, And that should have been done over 100yrs ago. And my next choice would have been the woman who fought to give women the right to vote. As for Blacks I have a time bias, and I would have picked Rosa Parks. But not been taught much about Harriet Tubman, Its a good choice. As I said, Women should have been on our currency over 100yrs ago. But knowing it was not until the early 20th century that women were allowed to vote, or own land, I guess putting a women who is also black makes some sense. Maybe we should bring back the $2 bill, and put another woman on that Bills. I also do not understand why it going to take almost 15yrs to start. We do not make the money 15,10 or even 5yrs in advance. Why can we not change the bills and add others in the next 1-3yrs?

It's about damn time we get a female on our money. Women grow up seeing males everywhere, and it's about time we get to see representation on our money. If you're a male, put yourself in a woman's shoes. Every single president has been male. We're told we aren't good enough for the job, that we're not smart enough, that we wouldn't be able to run a country properly without starting a war with Russia once a month while on our periods. This was long and ranty, but I seriously think that this is a wonderful change, and am looking forward to seeing her on my money. Andrew Jackson was and is an American hero, and should remain on the bill.

I think it's about damn time. Andrew Jackson was a horrible president. Harriet Tubman actually helped people, was a hero to so many. What did Andrew Jackson do? You should know if you took 9th grade history that he was a horrible person. And, seriously, it's about damn time we get a female on our money. Women grow up seeing males everywhere, and it's about time we get to see representation on our money. If you're a male, put yourself in a woman's shoes. Every single president has been male. I think it's an expensive log to burn. And that I will not use them and it's a scam to trick people into stop using 20's because pennies and nickles and other dollars and stuff are under used. So they wanna see if this will push people into filling up their wallets with extra bills.
So they can use the unused or push to a switch over to a credit based income system.
Which is why I hate it. Our freakin country is not working and the $20, one of the only things thats working perfectly. They wanna break. Wtf is wrong with them. Fix the 5 or 10. No one likes their designs anyways. Don't get rid of my familure pragmatism damnit.

I haven't seen it. I think the powers that be have to change them every now and then to prevent forgeries. It is very expensive to change them. Do away with pennies and dollar bills altogether! Save us $20s.
Tubman is a good choice. I would think Eleanor Roosevelt would have been more likely. She was a First Lady and a social reformer and great role model for any young girl.\
Tubman was brave and fearless. She was instrumental in helping people escape slavery. She helped the whole US doing that. She helped me and my relatives and yours, NO matter what color or social strata you are in.
I want a giant stack over here by me. Send your racist comments and a Tubman $20 to me anytime .
2016-04-25 20:20:13 UTC
I think it's a great idea. Harriet Tubman was a loyal person - the word "good" doesn't even begin to describe her. She helped slaves out of slavery through the Underground Railroad, often endangering herself. I believe she is quite worthy of being the new person shown on the $20 bill, especially since it is one of the more valuable bills.

We have had similar debates in Britain. The preference for Victorian males such as Darwin was criticised by feminists. An employee of the Royal mint told journalists that they didn't care about the gender or achievements of people on bank notes, but they preferred people with elaborate facial hair as it made forgery difficult.
Let's hope Harriet Tubman's face isn't too easy to copy

I have no problem with replacing Jackson on the $20 bill...but I think they should've put a Native American on it. Jackson affected the lives of many more Native Americans than Tubman did African Americans.

It's fine. The research and decision has been in the works for years so it's not a surprise, the Dept. of Treasure even asked, last year, for input on social media as to who the choice should be. It's hardly a shock out of the blue.
Harriet Tubman helped rescue people from slavery. Andrew Jackson owned slaves and promoted genocide against Native Americans.
It's a no-brainer that Tubman should replace Jackson. The question is why it didn't happen many years ago.

This is another attempt to please the African Americans in a false manner & stir up bad feelings in everyone so people like Albert Sharpton can make money by spewing out hate . If there is nothing real then don't make up stuff . Harriet Tubman is not enough to be considered for any US currency . Obama might be one day when people have forgotten what a bad president he has been . Really all that will make everyone feel good about everyone else is kindness & decent manners & ways . It cannot be force-fed to us . We will all throw it back up .

As our history changes we should change the faces on the dollar bills from time to time....maybe even bring back some old faces....I think we could rotate some faces every 50-75 years as new great Amer Cans appear in our lives.

I agree with George Washington on currency design - It should not have images of actual humans because that would be hero worship.
If they are going to put historical people on in spite of the wishes of George Washington, she is an excellent choice and Jackson was a very unpopular President.

I's no biggie. I never had a high opinion of Jackson, though. Maybe one of the reasons the person(s) opted for Tubman was that she was a black female -- two birds with one stone.

Long overdue.
Andrew Jackson enslaved many African Americans on his plantation. He murdered many Native Americans during the notorious “Trail of Tears.” He contributes only shame to to American history.
Harriet Tubman, on the other hand, worked to free slaves and did in fact conduct many slaves to freedom. She is a true hero and deserves only praise and thanks.

In my opinion it will still be worth exactly $20.
